Drug Addiction in Idaho

Opioid addiction has hit Idaho, with deaths from drug overdoses increasing over the past several years. Drug overdoses were responsible for more than 200 deaths in 2015.1 Idaho also has higher alcohol dependence rates than the national average. Moreover, the state has high rates of depression and other mental illnesses, and more than half of adults who need treatment for mental illness do not receive it.

Idaho has more than 100 different treatment centers to choose from that have been certified and licensed.2

Addiction by the Numbers
  • Between 2004 and 2013, Idaho’s drug-induced death totals more than doubled. The state had almost 2,000 deaths during the 9-year span.3
  • A 2015 survey revealed that nearly 17% of high school respondents had used a prescription drug without a doctor’s prescription at least once in their lives.4
  • Almost 3,000 people age 12 or older got help for a substance abuse problem in Idaho in 2015.5
  • In 2015, 56.7% of people enrolled in substance abuse treatment in Idaho struggled with both drugs and alcohol, 27.6% struggled with only drugs and 15.7% struggled with only alcohol.6
How Much Does Rehab Cost?

The cost of going to rehab in Idaho varies depending on the type of program and facility you choose. You may choose a luxury or private program or a standard inpatient setting. Things like the length of your program, the types of amenities the center has and your own personal requests (e.g., private room) can make a big difference in the overall cost.

Seventy percent of Idaho’s treatment facilities offer sliding scale fees, which reduce the cost of treatment for people who meet certain income requirements. Almost 90% of programs accept Medicaid, 43% accept Medicare and 68% accept private health insurance.7

Treatment Options

Idaho is home to a number of treatment programs that address a variety of addiction needs.  For example, people who are pregnant, LGBT, youth, elderly or veterans may have a better treatment experience if they attend a treatment center that is experienced in treating that specific population. Before you choose a treatment program you can meet with a doctor or rehab specialist who can make recommendations based on your situation.

Treatment programs in ID may include detoxification programs, inpatient or residential programs and outpatient programs. Most programs will offer a combination of evidence-based therapies such as motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy and contingency management. As part of their therapeutic regimen, programs may incorporate group counseling, 12-Step meetings, one-on-one therapy, substance abuse education and opportunities to exercise or explore nature.
