Drug Addiction in Kansas

Drug and alcohol abuse rates in Kansas tend to be slightly lower than the national average. But the state still struggles with addiction.

Methamphetamine remains the primary illicit substance of abuse in Kansas.2 Heavy alcohol use and binge drinking use have increased in recent years, and drug-related deaths have also gone up. In addition, less youth and adults view marijuana use as harmful compared to just a few years ago.

Addiction by the Numbers

  • Past-month heavy alcohol consumption in Kansas among adults increased from 2009-2013, from 4.1% to 4.6%.2
  • Thirty-day marijuana use among 12th graders increased from 2010-2014, from 17.1% to 18.3%.2
  • 6.4% of adolescents in Kansas aged 12-17 reported using marijuana in the past month in 2014-2015. In addition, 10.5% reported using alcohol in the past month.1
  • Methamphetamine treatment admissions nearly doubled between 2010 and 2014, from 1,901 to 3,412.2
  • The single-day count for treatment admissions for substance abuse increased from 10,863 in 2013 to 11,471 in 2015.1

How Much Does Rehab Cost?

Rehab costs vary based on a person’s individual preferences and the necessary level of care. A few variables contribute to the overall cost of treatment:

  • Length of stay: This is based upon the severity of the addiction and other factors.
  • Amenities: More luxurious amenities will add to the overall costs. You may be looking for luxury or executive rehab treatment.
  • Program type: Inpatient services offer 24/7 assistance and are more expensive than outpatient programs.
  • Services: Adding ancillary services such as massage therapy to the core offerings will increase the cost of paying for treatment.

Treatment Options

There are many different types of treatment methods for drug addiction. A rehab specialist will provide you with all of the information you need to get into the right program for you.

In 2015, Kansas had about 208 drug and alcohol addiction treatment centers. These centers provided care in outpatient, residential, and hospital/inpatient settings. In addition to substance abuse and mental health treatment, these facilities also offer care for domestic violence, HIV/AIDS support, smoking cessation, and employment and housing assistance. 3
