Drug Addiction in Nebraska

Nebraska’s rates of drug abuse are generally lower than the national average. However, alcohol abuse rates are above national rates,2 and illicit drug use has crept up in recent years.

Many people who seek treatment for substance abuse in Nebraska report both alcohol and drug problems, suggesting that people are abusing alcohol with other drugs. From 2005 to 2015, the primary substances of abuse in Nebraska substance abuse treatment programs were alcohol, methamphetamine/amphetamines, and marijuana.7

Addiction by the Numbers
  • Nebraska’s rate of past-month alcohol use among those 12 and older was also higher than the national average in 2014-2015 (57.43% vs. 52.18%).6
  • The number of people binge drinking in Nebraska is higher than the national average. In 2014, 20.3% of Nebraska adults reported binge drinking within the last month.5
  • Nebraska residents have a significantly higher rate of participation in drug treatment programs (1,043 enrollees out of 100,000 people) than the national average (557 enrollees per 100,000 people).7
  • Of those in substance abuse treatment in 2015, 47.2% were in treatment for both a drug and alcohol problem, 33% were in treatment for a drug problem only, and 19.8% were in treatment for an alcohol problem only.2
How Much Does Rehab Cost?

The cost of going to rehab all depends on the center you choose and the type of program you are in.

More than half of the facilities in NE offer treatment free of charge to those unable to pay. About 77% of programs accept private health insurance, almost 80% accept Medicaid, and almost 40% accept Medicare.1

One barrier to accessing treatment for substance abuse and mental health problems is either lack of health insurance or insufficient funds to pay for it. According to Nebraska’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the ability to pay is not a factor; persons pay what they can afford. Programs in the state offer sliding scale fees, unreimbursed care, and other subsidies.4

Treatment Options

There are more than 130 NE substance abuse treatment facilities at all levels of care, including those at the inpatient, residential, and outpatient levels.

Most programs offer individual counseling, group therapy, and family therapy, including marriage and couples’ counseling. About half offer self-help groups, 83% offer mental health services, 42% offer help for people who have experienced domestic violence, and 43% offer help finding social services.1

Local Resources for Recovering Addicts
  • The Nebraska Treatment Referral Line (800-648-4444), a service of DHHS, and the National Treatment Referral Hotline (800-662-4357), which is operated by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), provide information on mental health and substance abuse programs within a chosen geographical area.
  • The Nebraska Family Helpline (888-866-8660) is a 24/7/365 resource for families of youth experiencing behavioral health challenges.
  • The Nebraska Resource and Referral System is a searchable database that helps people find the services they need, including child care, health care, legal help, housing, counseling, and employment.
  • The LB 95 Program provides assistance in filling prescriptions for individuals who are poor or uninsured.
  • Alcoholics Anonymous in Nebraska holds free recovery meetings around the state for people who want to stop drinking. You can also make use of other 12-Step groups such as Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
