Which Types of Addiction Treatment Does Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Cover?

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care coverage for addiction may pay for some or all treatment options at an addiction treatment facility. Since everyone has their own personal needs, there are various levels of care available. Some of these levels of addiction treatment include the following:

  • Medical Detox. For some, treatment begins with medical detox, where medical professionals can offer care and supervision during the withdrawal process.3
  • Inpatient treatment program. When participating in an inpatient drug and alcohol rehab program, you will receive 24/7 care. You will reside at the facility for the duration of your care, which can be anywhere from one month to one year.3
  • Partial hospitalization program (PHP). In a PHP, you will receive treatment throughout the day, returning home at night. This treatment regimen is typically between 4 and 8 hours per day over the course of about 3 months.3
  • Intensive outpatient program (IOP). In a drug and alcohol IOP, you will be in an outpatient environment, participating for 9 to 20 hours per week, which is a greater time commitment than standard outpatient programs.3
  • Outpatient treatment program and therapy. A standard outpatient treatment program will involve therapy every week. Some people join a support group at this time, too. Outpatient programs for drug and alcohol addiction may meet one to several times a week, depending on the specific program.3
