TRICARE may partially or fully cover several levels of care based on your specific insurance plan and medical necessity.² TRICARE can offer full or partial coverage for the following levels of care:

• Medical detox. Many attend medical detox as their first step in the treatment process before transitioning to another level of care. During detox, patients safely withdraw from substances and reach stabilization under medical supervision.⁷
• Inpatient addiction treatment. Inpatient and residential programs provide a safe, highly structured living environment with 24/7 care.⁶ You’ll often participate in evidence-based treatment services, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT).⁶
• Partial hospitalization programs for addiction. As the highest level of outpatient treatment, partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) provide about 6 hours of daily, in-depth care.⁹ 
• Intensive outpatient programs for drug and alcohol addiction. With a minimum of 9 hours of weekly treatment, intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) are the next step up from traditional outpatient rehab.⁸
• Outpatient addiction treatment programs. Standard outpatient rehab offers similar therapeutic interventions, but you continue to live at home rather than at the facility during this time. This type of outpatient program is the least in-depth level of outpatient care and generally requires less attendance frequency.⁶
• Rehab aftercare. Mental health experts recommend remaining in addiction aftercare to promote long-term recovery. Sober living, ongoing counseling, and 12-Step programs are common continued care options.⁶
