If you’re curious about beginning a drug and alcohol treatment program and you have UMR insurance, you’re likely wondering about UMR coverage for addiction treatment.

UMR is not an insurance provider; rather, it’s a third-party administrator (TPA) that manages health insurance plans on behalf of employers.1 If your health insurance coverage is through an employer that uses UMR to manage your benefits, you may work with UMR on benefits management, claims processing, and more.1 Even though you may work closely with UMR throughout rehab, your insurance coverage is provided by another party, such as your employer or an insurance company like UnitedHealthcare. Here, we’ll explore what you need to know about UMR coverage for rehab.

Does UMR Cover Drug & Alcohol Treatment?

UMR can help you access drug and alcohol treatment through your health insurance company. The Affordable Care Act (ACA), enacted in 2010, has made health insurance available to more people by lowering premium costs.2 The ACA requires that health insurance companies cover behavioral health treatment, including treatment for substance use disorder (SUD).3

While UMR does not directly provide addiction treatment, the company works with your health insurance provider to help you maximize your coverage. If you’re ready to learn more about UMR coverage for addiction treatment, you can contact the company and speak with a representative. You can also contact an admissions navigator at American Addiction Centers (AAC) at . Our team is here 24/7 to help you learn more about your coverage and can verify your insurance benefits in just a few minutes.

Which Types of Addiction Treatment Does UMR Cover?

Your plan may cover various treatment levels. Care levels that UMR may cover include the following:

  • Medical detox : This is sometimes the first step in treatment, especially if you have been misusing alcohol or benzodiazepines. This process works to safely manage withdrawal symptoms under medical supervision as the body clears itself of substances. It can also ease the transition to ongoing treatment.4
  • Inpatient drug and alcohol rehab: This offers treatment in a hospital or residential-like setting. While in inpatient rehab you may participate in group and individual counseling, therapy, and support groups to help address the underlying causes of addiction.4
  • Outpatient addiction treatment programs: These are non-residential settings where you receive care during the day but live at home and can sometimes maintain responsibilities at home, school, or work.4
  • Intensive outpatient programs for drug and alcohol addiction: These offer treatment at a program site while allowing patients to live at home. An IOP involves attending 9 to 20 hours of weekly treatment sessions, typically lasting 2 months to 1 year.5
  • Partial hospitalization rehab programs: Also known as day treatment, these provide 20 or more hours of intensive treatment per week, offering more support than an intensive outpatient program but less treatment than a residential program.5
  • Aftercare: This is an important part of maintaining recovery after you leave formal treatment. Your aftercare plan may include 12-step meetings, individual therapy, and more.4

How to Use UMR For Addiction Treatment & Rehab

To access addiction rehab services through UMR, review your insurance policy to understand what is and isn’t covered. You can contact UMR’s customer service to verify what rehab facilities are in-network and if they require pre-authorization. Once you find an in-network facility, it’s a good idea to verify that the treatment you need is covered, and whether you need a referral before beginning treatment.
