New Video: Angelina Jolie’s Dark Past Resurfaces
Angelina Jolie is best known as a wildly successful actress, humanitarian and mother to six children. But now, a recently surfaced video from the late ‘90s is trying to bring her back to a darker past.
The video shows a wide-eyed and emaciated Jolie allegedly hanging out in a drug den shortly after she had won a Golden Globe for Gia. The video was shot by 39-year-old Franklin Meyer, who claims to have been her drug dealer while she lived in New York City. She is speaking on the phone with someone while in the dingy apartment, which he says took place right after he sold the actress heroin and cocaine. Meyer sold the video to the National Enquirer, but neither Jolie or her reps have commented on the leaked tape.
Angelina Jolie’s Road to Recovery
Numerous gossip sites over the years have reported that Jolie entered rehab for various drug-related relapses, while recent sources claim that she has become an advocate for underwater primal scream therapy. However, Jolie has never publicly acknowledged entering rehab or therapy.

She revealed in 2010 that she abused drugs and cut herself during her teens and early twenties to cope with depression. “I knew little about the world and I was completely self-absorbed,” she said. “I was searching for something deeper, something more. I tried everything. I always felt caged… like I was punching at things that weren’t there. I always had too much energy for the room I was in.”
Jolie also hinted at past drug abuse during a 2011 interview with 60 Minutes, acknowledging that “for many reasons, I shouldn’t be here. I went through heavier, darker times and I survived them. I didn’t die young, so I’m very lucky.”
The largely private actress has not given a public opinion on alcohol or drug use, nor has she commented on whether or not she is still sober these days. However, long-time partner Brad Pitt revealed in 2012 that he quit doing drugs after getting “burnt out” in the ‘90s. His primary drug of choice was pot, but he ultimately felt it was holding back his career.
“I was hiding out from the celebrity thing. I was smoking way too much dope. I was sitting on the couch and just turning into a doughnut and I got really irritated with myself,” he explained. “[Now], I have a handful of close friends and I have my family. I’m making things. I just haven’t known life to be any happier.”
