The Dynamic Duo: Recovery Grads and Alumni Programs
Janelle was about to “graduate” from rehab. Her residential stay was nearly over. She was definitely in a better place than when she arrived, but she was scared. She was also worried: What’s going to happen when she leaves the safety of rehab? Will she relapse once she’s back at home with all the old temptations and triggers?
Janelle mentioned her concerns to her counselor, who explained the facility’s alumni program to her. She thought to herself, “This sounds perfect; it’s just what I need.”
It was at this point Jenelle realized she wouldn’t be alone after leaving rehab. The alumni program could provide her with valuable support by keeping recent grads connected to the recovery community.
Alumni Programs 101
Janelle’s certainly not alone; everyone needs support in order to maintain sobriety. Alumni programs provide that healthy network of sober support by keeping treatment program graduates connected to the staff, while also helping them establish connections in the community. She’s even been able to connect with a support group and employment resources.
Janelle attends weekly meetings with her alumni group. The program director also plans weekly sober socials – events where Janelle is able to meet others who have had similar experiences. “It’s great to share my struggles and be encouraged by their long-time success with sobriety.”
Janelle is grateful for the weekly call and email update she receives from the alumni director – it feels nice to have someone who cares enough to check in on her. This support, combined with the healthy relationships she continues to form, provides the structure she needs to continue building on her successful recovery.
Lemons to Lemonade
Janelle now has an opportunity to give back, thanks to her continued connection with the treatment facility. She’s able to do things she never dreamed of – like encouraging others to achieve their recovery goals.
For thousands of people like Janelle, supportive aftercare can literally become a lifesaver. Don’t deprive yourself of the benefits these post-rehab programs have to offer. Get involved, stay connected and let your story of recovery be one that inspires others to follow in your footsteps!
