What Is the VA Community Care Network (CCN)?
The VA Community Care Network is an integrated system of external providers that offer Veterans healthcare services when the VA can’t provide care.1 There may be several reasons why the VA can’t provide care, such as a Veteran’s location or unmet healthcare concerns.1
The VA Community Care Network offers expert treatment through qualified VA partners located in five regions across the U.S. and meets specific quality care standards outlined by the VA.1
Unfortunately, many Veterans don’t receive the care they need, whether due to mental health stigma in the military, or a Veteran being too far from a VA healthcare facility.2 This is where VA CCN providers can step in to fulfill these needs.
VA Community Care offers various services to Veterans, including in-network care for immediate needs such as emergency and urgent care.1
Other services covered by VA Community Care Network providers include:1
- Routine medical care.
- Dental care.
- Surgeries.
- Dialysis.
- Vaccines.
- Rehabilitation.
- Assisted living, home health care, and nursing homes.
Complementary and integrative care such as hypnotherapy and massage may be approved, as well as mental health care, including treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) and co-occurring conditions like PTSD and addiction.1 The VA pays for the cost of care when a Veteran receives treatment from a Community Care Network partner.3
How Does the VA Community Care Network Work?
Two private companies, Optum Serve and TriWest Healthcare Alliance, manage and administer the Community Care Network, depending on where in the five VA CCN regions a Veteran lives.1 These companies help Veterans find care and also process claims from the Veteran Community Care Network.1 If a Veteran is interested in receiving care from a member of the Community Care Providers Network, they’ll first need to meet specific eligibility requirements and receive prior approval from the VA.4
Who Is Eligible for Community Care Benefits?
Veterans who wish to receive treatment from a Community Care Network provider need to meet certain requirements as outlined by the VA. You can find out if you’re eligible by visiting the VA CCN eligibility website or calling the VA at 877-881-7618 (TTY: 711) Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. ET.1
Veterans must meet both of these requirements:3
- They must be enrolled in or eligible for VA health care, and
- They must have approval from the VA health care team before receiving care from a community provider (with exceptions for certain cases like urgent or emergency care).
They must also meet at least one of the following requirements:3
- They must need a service that isn’t provided at any VA health facility, or
- Live in a state or territory that doesn’t have a full-service VA health facility, or
- Live in Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wyoming, or
- Are qualified under the 40-mile distance requirement on June 6, 2018, and live in a location that would still make them eligible under these requirements, or
- The VA can’t provide the care needed within their standards for drive and wait times, or
- The Veteran and their VA provider agree that getting care from an in-network community provider is in their best medical interest, or
- The VA is unable to provide needed service in a way that meets their quality standards.
VA CCN Regional Networks
As mentioned above, the VA Community Care Network is administered by two companies, Optum Serve and TriWest Healthcare Alliance, which divide up administrative duties depending on which of the five regional networks within the VA CCN Map a Veterans lives.1
How to Find a VA Community Care Network Provider
Veterans who believe that they meet the eligibility requirements listed above and are interested in receiving care from a Community Care Network provider should follow these steps:5
- Get authorization. You’ll need to contact the VA and receive a referral before you can schedule an appointment.
- Search for an approved provider. You can search for a treatment provider on your own, or you can ask the VA to find a provider for you from the VA Community Care Network providers list.
- Schedule an appointment and notify the VA. Once you have the referral, you’ll be able to schedule your appointment, or the VA can schedule it for you. Make sure you inform the VA healthcare team of your appointment within 14 days.
