Serenity House really seems to care about their clients. They focus on the disease aspect of addiction, teaching those who are striving for life-long recovery how to deal with the physical and mental cravings as well as how to maintain a healthy spiritual, mental, and physical outlook. If you're looking for a fancy, frilly place, Serenity House if probably not for you. However, if you are looking for tools to provide you or a loved one the education and skills needed to cope in a stressful world without the drugs that once helped you through it, Serenity House is a great place to start. The counselors there were top-notch. They had a great deal of experience with the disease aspect of addiction. The facility is dated, but it is quaint and serves its purpose well. I wish there had been more emphasis on the holistic aspect of recovery. Using yoga, herbs, relaxation techniques, etc... is a very important aspect of after care. There was no emphasis on this except meditation to a very slight extent. I wish they would update the facilities, the women had to walk to their house from the main house, a block. This was due to growth of Serenity House, so I suppose its a good thing in a way.
As many before me have said, Starlite saved my life. What I recall most vividly were the classes, the fellowship among my own kind, and the incredible breakfasts. I have not found it necessary to take a drink for 17 years. Thank you, Starlite.
