Kentucky has high rates of both alcohol and drug abuse, particularly opioids such as heroin, fentanyl and various prescription painkillers.

Over 1,000 Kentuckians died from overdoses each year from 2012-2015, and the average annual rate of death by overdose in the state is 24.53 per 100,000 residents. Heroin-related overdoses made up approximately 28% of overdose deaths in 2015. Fentanyl-related overdoses made up 34% of all deaths that year.¹

• In 2009-2010, Kentucky was one of the top 10 states for past-year non-medical use of prescription painkillers among those age 12-17.⁶
• Marijuana is the most used illicit drug in Kentucky.⁷ An estimated 449,000 people (12.28%) had used marijuana in the past year in 2014-2015, and 258,000 (7.06%) had used in the past month.⁸
• From 1999 to 2008, Kentucky treatment admissions with opioids listed as the primary substance increased 900%.⁵
• 44% of individuals enrolled in substance abuse treatment in 2015 reported receiving treatment services for drugs, 18.2% for alcohol, and 37.7% for both drug and alcohol disorders.³
• Nearly 3,000 individuals were receiving methadone treatment in Kentucky in 2015, compared to 1,760 in 2011.³

Addiction treatment costs fluctuate based on a few variables. Your individual preferences will play a hand in determining costs, as will factors outside of your control such as the severity of the addiction and any co-occurring disorders. Overall, the following factors play a role in determining costs: length of stay (e.g. 28-30 days, 60 days, 90 days), facility amenities, program type e.g. private, luxury and services.

The state of Kentucky has over 300 treatment facilities with a variety of specialized programs available to adolescents, men, women, veterans, people with co-occurring mental disorders and people who have experienced trauma. Most programs offer a range of levels of care from detox, residential, intensive outpatient (IOP), outpatient (OP) and sober living treatment options.^2,4

Further, the state has extensive access to a variety of 12-Step groups, including Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), for support and fellowship.
