Drug Addiction in Oklahoma

The opioid epidemic in the United States has affected Oklahoma, with the number of overdose deaths significantly increasing over the past decade. The good news is that the state has low rates of alcohol, marijuana and cocaine use, though some measures of alcohol abuse are above national averages.1,2,4

Further, adolescents in Oklahoma appear to be more susceptible to serious mental illness, including major depressive disorder, compared to same-aged adolescents in other states.2 This may be the related to the reason why so many people in the state abuse prescription painkillers. In 2013-2014, Oklahoma had the highest percentage of people age 12 and older who reported abusing prescription painkillers than any other state.1

Fortunately, it appears that many residents have access to proper treatment and benefit from it.

Addiction by the Numbers
  • In 2009, unintentional poisonings—mainly from prescription drug overdose—became the state’s leading cause of accidental death.1
  • From 2004 to 2016, Oklahoma’s number of overdose deaths from prescription drugs more than doubled, and the number of deaths from hydrocodone and oxycodone more than quadrupled.1
  • In 2012-2013, the rate of past-month binge alcohol use among those age 12-20 surpassed the national average (15.4% vs. 14.7%).4
  • In 2015, approximately 16,783 Oklahoma residents were enrolled in substance use treatment—up from 16,700 in 2013.2
  • In 2015, 3,500 Oklahoma residents received methadone treatment for opioid addiction, compared to 3,090 in 2013. 2
  • In 2015, 41% of Oklahoma residents received treatment primarily for a drug problem, 13.8% received treatment primarily for alcohol, and 45.2% received treatment for both drug and alcohol abuse. 2
How Much Does Rehab Cost?

The cost of rehab in the state of Oklahoma will depend on the level of care provided. Considerations such as inpatient or outpatient treatment setting, private and luxury vs. standard inpatient programs, medications-assisted therapy and program amenities all factor into the final cost of the program.

Thankfully, many insurance programs, including Medicare and Oklahoma Medicaid, offer coverage for addiction treatment services. Contact your provider to find out which services are covered and which treatment facilities are in your network.

Other payment options are available for those who don’t have insurance, including sliding scale fees that adjust the cost of treatment based on the patient’s ability to pay, and payment plans that allow patients to make affordable monthly payments that fit their budget.

Contacting the facility directly is the best way to learn about the payment options to help you make your final decision.

Treatment Options

The National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS) lists 208 treatment facilities in Oklahoma for people struggling with substance use disorders.3

Facilities offer a variety of different services, including detox, medication-assisted treatment, 12-step programs, residential treatment, and sober housing. Such treatment services are provided for a variety of populations, including adolescents, pregnant women, veterans, and gender-specific populations.
