Many of the drug-related deaths occur in people with chronic pain who misuse their prescribed pain medication. The majority of deaths from prescription pain medications involved oxycodone according to data from 2013-2015.1
From 2007-2010, Utah received state funding to provide treatment and resources for the growing opiate problem. The state experienced significant decreases in opioid deaths during this period. Since the funding expired, opioid-related deaths have increased. By 2014, deaths from opioids had risen 27%.1
