The most rapidly growing drug problem in Minnesota is the abuse of prescription opioid painkillers. Within the last 15 years in Minnesota, opioids have been responsible for the deaths of more than 2,700 people. The majority, or 80% of these deaths, have involved prescription drugs. During the past 15 years, Minnesota has experienced a 1,220% increase in opiate-related deaths.¹

• The number of people enrolled in opioid treatment programs who were receiving methadone increased from 3,785 in 2011 to 5,530 in 2015, according to single-day counts.⁵
• In Minneapolis, treatment admissions for methamphetamine increased by 18.9% from 2011-2012.²

Minnesota has more than 350 substance abuse treatment facilities in the state. These programs treat a variety of populations including adolescents, men, women, seniors, and people struggling with both addiction and mental health disorders. Some programs offer methadone maintenance therapy for opiate addiction.⁶

Treatment approaches in Minnesota include cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing and anger management.⁶

Other services offered at these programs include case management, peer support, employment counseling, domestic violence services and transportation assistance to treatment.⁶
