Drug Addiction in Iowa

Alcohol is Iowa’s most abused substance, and marijuana is the state’s most used illicit drug. Methamphetamine is also a problem, and opioid abuse is the fastest-growing form of substance abuse in Iowa. Overdoses from prescription medications are near all-time highs.1

In addition, both underage and binge drinking exceed national averages, and synthetic drugs and marijuana concentrates (hash oil) are growing concerns.1

The primary substance of abuse for juveniles entering treatment in 2014 in Iowa was marijuana (66.3%), followed by alcohol (21.9%) and methamphetamine (4.1%).1

Addiction by the Numbers

  • 25,000 adolescents (10.2% of the adolescent population) reported using alcohol in the past month in 2014-2015. 2
  • 16 million gallons of alcohol were sold in 2015 in Iowa. This rate is up from 3.26 million gallons in 2004. 1
  • Almost 50% of adults aged 18-25 reported binge drinking within the last 30 days in 2013-2014. 1
  • Emergency room visits due to opioid abuse have almost tripled since 2014.1
  • In 2015, 783 individuals in Iowa received methadone treatment for opioid addiction, based on a single-day count. This was up from 490 in 2011.2
  • 7,196 individuals received substance abuse treatment for methamphetamine in 2014 compared to 4,062 in 2000. 1

How Much Does Rehab Cost?

The cost of addiction treatment varies depending on a number of factors including the program type, length of your stay, amenities, and the treatment services provided.

The program type, length of stay, and services are based on your individual needs and the severity of your substance use. These criteria are usually determined with the help of an addiction treatment specialist during the admission process.

Other factors such as luxury amenities and special services like massage therapy are based on your individual preference, and will add to the overall cost of treatment.

Treatment Options

In a 2015 survey, Iowa had 151 treatment facilities, with a variety of options available depending on the individual’s needs. Services included medication-assisted treatment (MAT), dual diagnosis approaches, inpatient or residential housing and special focus on adolescents, men and women.3

Don’t worry if you’re unsure about what type of program you need. An addiction specialist will guide you through the process and give you recommendations for your individual circumstance.
